Jesus Christ
To Christians, Jesus is a friend. He encourages everyone to do their best. He saves everyone from their sins. Most importantly, he is God who took human nature. Everyone that Christians believe has been revealed in him or thorugh him. Jesus has many titles in the Bible. "Jesus" means "God saves." It is though Jesus alone that we are saved from our sins, which is why God gave him the name that is "above every name." Christ is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word Messiah, which means "annointed one." Another title of Jesus in the Bible is the Son of God. This signifies God and Jesus' special relationship. Jesus is the only true, eternal Son of God and is one of the three persons of the Holy Trinity. Finally, Jesus is most frequently referred to as Lord, in the New Testament. Lord is the Greek word that they used instead of Yahweh, the Hebrew word for God. Jesus had a human nature, just as we do. However, he also the divine intellect and will. The mystery of the union of Jesus' divine and human nature in one divine person is called the incarnation. WIthout losing his divine nature, Jesus became fully human. Catholics believe that if they believe in Jesus Christ and give themselves to him with their whole heart, mind, and, soul, the Holy Spirit will help them become more fully the image of God, which is the ultimate destiny. Jesus' mother was named Mary. Another name for he is theotokos, a Greek word that literally means "mother of God." Because Jesus is God himself, Mary is truly the mother of God. Because Mary has no physical children other than Jesus her spiritual motherhood extends to all who call Jesus a brother. Mary was able to give birth to Jesus because she was in a perfect state of Grace. That is, her relationship with God was not marred by sin from the first moment she came into existence. Jesus' Mission As a child, Jesus was aware of his special relationship with God. However, Jesus' childhood is considered the hidden years because we do not know much about them. Jesus' public mission started when he was baptized by his cousin John, also known as John the Baptist. Jesus began his mission by recruiting disciples who immediately recognized him as the Messiah. Jesus' miracles are a powerful sign that made the kingdom of God present. Jesus performed four types of miracles. The first type of miricales are physical healings or curing people. The second type of mircacles are exorcism or driving out demons. The third type are bring the dead back to life and the final type are nature miracles. |
